Girls Golf:

The Red Wing Wingers girls golf team finished second at the State Class AA tournament Thursday at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

Minnewaska Area won it's fifth straight title with a 632 two day total.  The Wingers were second at 647 with Detroit Lakes third at 726.

The Wingers scores; Katie Kesti 160 (5th overall), Marisa Toivonen and Danielle Brooks 163 (8th), Rachel Oeltgen 169 (14th), Ashley Brooks 171 (18th) and Nikki Pasch 178 (32nd).

Lake City had three girls indivdually in AA.  Annalise Wallerich and Erika Meincke each had two day totals of 173 (23rd) with Abby Gruber carding a 175 (27th).

Amateur Baseball:

The 23rd annual Dewey Tauer baseball tourney got underway Thursday night and both games were played with stormy weather swirling around the area.

New Richmond edged Hastings 5-4 and the Rochester Royals belted the St. Paul Roosters 11-1 in 7 innings.

The tourney continues tonight.  Here are the matchups:

Game Two: Cannon Falls Bears vs. Mankato Twins

The Aces will play at 7pm Saturday in the final game of the day whether the win or lose tonight.

Girls Golf: Wingers chasing Lakers for State AA Title

Four time defending state champion Minnewaska Area shot a 305 team total and has a 14 shot lead on the second place Red Wing Wingers after the first round of the Girls State Class AA Golf Tournament at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

Senior Sarah Roering of Minnewaska Area fired a 71 with fellow senior Allie Ostrander in second place individually with a 73.  Red Wing sophomore Katie Kesti is alone in third place with a first round score of 76.  The other scores for the Wingers: Rachel Oeltgen 79, Marisa Toivonen 81 and Danielle Brooks 83.  The scores that didn't count in the first round: Ashley Brooks 89 and Nikki Pasch with a 90,

The Wingers 319 total is one of their best scores of the season and while they trail Minnewaska Area by 14 shots, Red Wing has a 34 shot lead on third place Detroit Lakes.

Lake City has three golfers individually in the AA field.  Annalise Wallerich shot an 83, Erika Meincke an 87 and Abby Gruber a 90.

The final round is today with the first group of golfers teeing off at 7:30am and the final group getting underway at 9am.

The 23rd Annual Dewey Tauer invitational gets underway with two quarterfinal matchups at the Red Wing Athletic Field this evening.

The New Richmond Millers face the Hastings Hawks at 6pm followed by the Rochester Royals and St. Paul Roosters. 

Friday night it's the Red Wing Aces and New Prague Orioles in the first game with the pre-game show at 5:45pm and the first pitch at 6pm on Bluff Country 1250 KCUE and on the web at www.1250kcue.com,

The Mankato Twins and Cannon Falls Bears meet in the second game Friday night.

Four games are on tap Saturday with three games on Sunday including the championship game which should start around 4pm.

Girls State Golf:

The Red Wing Wingers girls golf team competes in the MSHSL State AA Tournament today and tomorrow at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

The Wingers will be one of the prime challengers to four time defending state champion Minnewaska Area.  The Lakers haven't lost a match or tourney of any kind in four years.

The Wingers golfers at state are junior Nikki Pasch,  junior Ashley Brooks, sophomore Katie Kesti, junior Danielle Brooks, senior Rachel Oeltgen and junior Marissa Toivonen.

Lake City has three individuals at state: junior Abby Gruber, junior Annalise Wallerich and senior Erika Meincke.

Amateur Baseball:

Prescott Pirates 7 Red Wing Aces 1- The Pirates belted the Aces Tuesday night at the Athletic Field, putting together a solid game to break a two game losing streak.

The Aces only run came in the bottom of the first inning when Adam Thygesen was hit by a pitch and scored on Steve Boldt's one out double to center.  The Aces wouldn't get another hit until Jimmy Bohmbach two out double in the eighth inning.

Prescott scored twice in the third inning off Aces starter Aaron Johnson .  Dillon Powell singled, Ben Krings walked, Justin Tobias' sacrafice bunt moved the runners up a base and Chris Tarrazas' single up the middle scored both runners.

The Pirates carried the 2-1 lead into the ninth inning, then blew the game open.  The Pirates loaded the bases  with one out against Aces pitcher Luke Halvorson,  who came on in the seventh inning to replace Johnson on the mound.  Augie Lindmark came in for Halvorson, but Alex Ross' infield single to short scored a run and two pitches later Brady Randolph hit a grand slam home run to left field to make it 7-1 and seal the deal.

Aaron Johnson took the loss for Red Wing while Mike La Barbera went the first five innings on the hill to get the win for Prescott.

The Pirates are 9-6 on the year.  The Aces are 12-5 on the season and host New Prague at 6pm Friday in the first round of the 23rd annual Dewey Tauer Tournament on Bluff Country 1250 KCUE and ont he web at www.1250kcue.com.

State Track & Field:

Senior Kim Hovey of Red Wing won the Class AA shot put title Saturday for the second straight year at Hamline University in St. Paul.  Hovey's winning toss was 43 feet even.  Hovey will attend the University of Minnesota this fall and toss the shot put for the Gophers.

On the boys side, junior Luke Johnson was second in the discus behind Farmington's Logan Hussong.  The Wingers Bryant Blahnik was  11th in the 1600 meter run.

8th grader Emi Trost of Cannon Falls was second in the 1600 meter run in Class A competition Saturday.  The Lake City 4 x 100 relay team of 8th grader Brandy White, freshman Taylor Koller, 8th grader Shannon Ting and senior Jennifer Vaith was fourth Saturday.  Lake City freshman Kristine Novak was 12th in the pole vault.

The Red Wing Wingers girls golf team competes in the State Class AA meet Wednesday and Thursday at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.  Katie Kesti, Rachel Oeltgen, Danielle Brooks, Ashley Brooks, Marissa Toivonen. Nikki Pasch and Anna Busch are on the Wingers varsity squad.  The Wingers are seen as the prime contender to four time defending state champ Minnewaska Area.

Lake City has three individuals at state: Annalise Wallerich, Erika Meinke and Abby Gruber.

Amateur Baseball:

Red Wing Aces 7 Northfield Knights 1- Kyle Blahnik's rbi single snapped a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning as the Aces pulled away for the win. Dave Jenson hit a solo home run, his first career Aces home run, in the seventh inning and the Aces added three runs in the eighth and one  in the ninth for the victory.

Andy Gibart allowed one run on four hits in eight innings on the mound for the win.  Brett gadient pitched the ninth inning for Red Wing.

The Aces are 12-4 on the year and 7-1 in the CCVL.

Next game: Prescott at Red Wing Tuesday with the pre-game show at 7:15pm and the first pitch at 7:30pm on Bluff Country 1250 KCUE and on the web at www.1250kcue.com.   It's also Longhaul Bombers night as Red Wing's Rich "Geno" Buck heads a list of four players who belt tape measure home runs in a slow pitch softball hitting exhibition before the game.  The Longhaul Bombers tour major league ballparks as well and will be at Target Field Wednesday njight before the Twins vs. Rockies game.  There will be lots of prizes and autographs for the kids before the game tomorrow night!

Other scores from Sunday:

Miesville 1 Hastings 0-The Mudhens Paul Eppen scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning for the only run of the game.  Miesville is 7-0 in the CCVL.

Dundas 13 Randolph 0

Ellswoth 9 Lake City 8-Jeremiah Paulson's bases loaded double in the top of the ninth inning rallied Ellsworth to the win.  Kris Long and Brett Gwaltney had two rbi's each for Lake City.  The Serpents fall to 9-1 on the season.

Bay City 8 Elmwood 5-Justin lance hit a grand slam for Bay City.

American Legion baseball tonight:

High School Softball:

Zumbrota-Mazeppa's great year came to an end Thursday with two losses in the Class AA portion of the girls state softball tournament at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

Park Center beat the Cougars 9-1 in the quarterfinals in the morning game and Rocori scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to beat Zumbrota-Mazeppa 3-1 in the consolation bracket game Thursday afternoon.  Megan Nelson was the losing pitcher in both games for the Cougars, who end their year with a 22-4 record.

In Class AAA, Hastings beat Prior Lake 5-0, then lost 1-0 to Burnsville.  The Raiders play Maple Grove in the third place game at 11am today.

High School Track & Field:

The Boys & Girls State Track and Field meet is today and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Bryant Blahnik of Red Wing is in the Class AA 3200 meter run today and the 1600 meter run tomorrow.  Luke Johnson of Red Wing is the the shot put today and discus tomorrow.  Kim Hovey on the girls side is in the discus today and shot out tomorrow.

in Class A, Lake City's Kristine Novak is in the pole vault Saturday and the Tigers girls 4 x 100 relay team is in the prelims today.

8th grader Emi Trost of Cannon Falls is in the 3200 meter run today and the 1600 meter run tomorrow.  Demetre Growette of Cannon Falls is in the boys 400 meter dash prelims today along with the Bombers boys 4 x 200 relay team.
