Amateur Baseball: Red Wing 3 Lake City 0- The Aces blanked the Serpents on Tom Gwaltney night at the Athletic Field as pitching and defense ruled the evening. The Aces honored longtime Serpents manager Tom Gwaltney, who is battling ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) before the game, giving him a custom made bat and designating Lake City as the home team for the game. Tom's son Scott now manages the Serpents. The Aces scored two runs in top of the first inning off Serpents starter Brett Gwaltney. Kyle Blahnik singled and Andy Schilling walked. With Jimmy Bohmbach at the plate, the Aces executed a double steal and when Serpents catcher Kyle Sill's throw skipped by third baseman Matt Miller into left field, Blahnik scampered home on the play and Schilling went to third base. Schilling then scored on Bohmbach's sacrafice fly to right field to make it 2-0. The Serpents best chance to score all night came in the third inning when three singles loaded the bases with two outs against Aces starter Josh Thygesen. Thygesen escaped trouble by getting Derek Sogla on a groundout to shortstop to end the threat. Gwaltney pitched the first four innings and the Aces scored their final run off Kyle Sursely, the second Serpents pitcher, in the seventh inning. Dave Jenson walked with one out and Kyle Blahnik and Andy Schilling singled to load the bases. Jenson then scored on a wild pitch before Suresly pitched out of further trouble. Josh Thygesen pitched six scoreless innings to get the win for the Aces. Aaron Johnson pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four and Augie Lindmark pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking two of the three batters he faces in earning the save. Andy Schilling was 4-4 with a double and a walk to lead the Aces offense. Kyle Blahnik added two hits. Lake City had seven hits but didn't get a hit after the sixth inning. Jarod Nihart and Andrew Roble had two hits apiece. The Aces are 25-12 on the year and host Bay City Friday night at 7:30pm with the pre-game show at 7:15pm on Bluff Country 1250 KCUE and on the web at www.1250kcue.com. Lake City finishes their season at 24-4. Serpents banned from post season: The Lake City Serpents were banned from Class C post season play by the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Board for using an ineligible player during the season. The ruling was handed down earlier this week. Serpents manager Scott Gwaltney disputed the decision that sees Lake City's best season ever end without post season play.
