VFW Baseball: Red Wing wins opener Red Wing 10 St. Cloud 4- VFW Post 1218 used two big innings to win their opening game of the State Tournament Thursday afternoon at Riverland Community College in Austin. Down 1-0 after the first inning, Red Wing exploded for six runs in the top of the second inning against St. Cloud pitcher Reese Gregory. RBi singles by Carsten Meyer and Karsten Lampman gave Red Wing a 2-1 lead Zach Garner reached on an error by St. Cloud second baseman Jake Braegelmann which loaded the bases with two outs. Catcher David Goggin followed with a two run single up the middle on a 3-2 pitch to make it 4-1. A wild pitch by Gregory scored another run and when courtesy runner Marcus Noesen went from first to third on the play a wild throw over the third baseman's head from catcher Eric Jarosch saw Noesen score to put Red Wing ahead 6-1. St. Cloud scored a run in the fourth inning and had runners at first and third with one out when pitcher Zach Garner got D.J. Smith to hit into an inning-ending 3-6-3 doubleplay: first baseman Carsten Meyer to shortstop Joel Newman and then back to Meyer. Red Wing carried the 6-2 lead into the seventh inning and put it away with a four run outburst. With one out, Zach Garner singled and David Goggin walked. Joel Newman, celebrating his 17th birthday, followed with a laser like two run double to left field. A wild pitch and two errors later Red Wing led 10-2. St. Cloud scored two runs and loaded the bases on Garner with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning before Dayton Johnson moved over from third base to the mound and struck out Eric Boysen to end the game. Zach Garner was the winning pitcher. Red Wing is 26-1 on the season. Today: Red Wing vs. Worthington from Riverland Community College 11:15am pre-game...first pitch 11:30am on Bluff Country 1250 KCUE and on the web at www.1250kcue.com with "Action" Jack Colwell. If Red Wing wins they play saturday in the winners bracket at 1pm. If Red Wing loses they play again at 5pm today in the losers bracket of the 10 team tourney. Amateur Baseball: Aces prep for Dukes The Red Wing Aces held a long practice Thursday night to prepare for their upcoming Section 1B playoff series against the Dundas Dukes. The best of five series starts Saturday night on Bluff Country 1250 KCUE and on the web at www.1250kcue.com with the pre-game show at 7:40pm and the first pitch at 8pm from the Athletic Field. Todd Mathison starts on the mound for Dundas. Josh Thygesen starts for the Aces. Game two is Sunday night at 8pm with Charlie Ruud starting for the Dukes and Andy Gibart hurling for the Aces. Dundas was 34-10 for the regular season while the Aces compiled a 29-13 record. The teams split their two regular season meetings. The other Section 1B series starts tonight with Hastings at Miesville at 8pm. High School Notes: Fall Sports Registration night is Monday, August 9th at 5:15pm at the Red Wing High School Courtyard Cafe. Fees and forms will be handled at that time. A general meeting will follow and then break out sessions with the fall sports coaches. Fall sports for Red Wing include football, volleyball, girls swimming and diving, boys and girls soccer and boys and girls cross country. Goodhue has a similar meeting at 7pm Monday. The Wildcats fall sports are football and volleyball. River City Days sports: Sylvanders tennis tournament continues through the weekend,KWNG IT Bean Bag Championship starts at 10am Saturday, Disc Golf tourney 9:30am Saturday at Memorial Park and the River City ramble starting at 8am Sunday
